My husband is traveling Mon-Thurs for his work, so I’ll be stuck with the little one until he gets back. I’ve decided for my own sanity to stay with my parents during this time.. 1.5 hour ride there, plus I’ll be dropping off my husband at the airport along the way. Still have to pack. Wish me luck!

Yesterday my mom posted a picture on Facebook of my 5 year old brother Sam wearing a pair of shoes he picked out for his first day of preschool.

She explained to him in the store that they were really made for girls. Sam then told her that he didn’t care…

No, I’m not turning British here. I noticed when I changed the little guy sometime around 6 or 7AM this morning that his belly button has red crusties in it. Shoot, he’s been bleeding! His umbilical stump had fallen off a few days ago and it looked good, but now he’s bleeding all of a sudden. Not actively bleeding, but the crud concerned me. Called the pediatrician when the office opened and they were good enough to get me in at 11AM. Doctor looks at our son and says he looks fine, it’s healing. He said to be concerned if it starts leaking fluids (not blood), gets red, or gets swollen.

So, false alarm! I’m guessing it just got rubbed or something because the little guy has been easiest to calm down when he is laying belly down on your chest. Then, once he falls asleep we put him in his crib on his back. *shrug*

Mandatory pest control..

Our apartment complex has regular mandatory pest control inspections/treatments in the kitchen. Unfortunately for the occupants, that requires completely emptying the kitchen cabinets and counters. And we got the notice yesterday that the pest control guy will be in tomorrow. So today I get the wonderful joy of trying to figure out where in the world I’m going to store everything until the deed is done. Sucks! Especially since my husband has a late meeting today, so I’m the one who gets to clean. And at the same time care for a fussy 2-week old. He’s quiet now and I’m about a quarter of the way done with the kitchen, but I’m taking a short break.. I’m tired and I wish I could be napping now instead of cleaning.

Ok, back to work! The sooner the deed is done, the sooner I can nap (in theory).

It has been a while.. A lot has happened.

I was to be induced into labor on the 10th. I went into labor on my own the night before. I know exactly when it started because the contractions HURT. They had never hurt me before. I was making dinner.. I’ve had so many false alarms, though, that I wasn’t convinced until an hour in.

Long story short, I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy in the morning on the 10th. He weighed 8lb, 9oz. With the epidural, it really wasn’t bad at all.. and I didn’t need an episiotomy and I didn’t tear at all. Only had to push for 40 minutes when I was told at the start that most first-time mothers have to push for 2 hours. I felt really accomplished with how I did! :) My recovery has been rather easy, which I believe I owe greatly to not tearing.

Our little son is beautiful! I couldn’t love him more. I think he has a lot of his father’s features and I think he’s going to grow up looking a lot like his daddy. I love when we’re cuddled together and peaceful. When he’s awake and just looking around at everything is amazing. I wonder what it is like for him, seeing everything for the first time. Granted, I know his vision is still developing, so everything is probably fuzzy blurs of different brightnesses and colors.

Breastfeeding was awful the first week. Anyone who says a good latch will prevent pain lies! The lactation consultant at the hospital said he had a great latch on me, but it still hurt like hell the first few second. I ended up with bits swelling, then bleeding. Hurt like hell to nurse like that, and I cried when it was at its worst. But I’m a stubborn SOB, and I knew what I was getting myself into. I kept applying lanolin after each feeding and I’ve since healed and ‘toughened’ so-to-speak. Actually, now that they’ve fully healed, I don’t think my nips have ever felt this soft.. still is a moment of pain when our son latches, but it passes quickly. Unless I have other problems, I intend to continue to breastfeed him until he is weaned.

The biggest issue is the little guy gets gassy and colicky. He can cry for an hour or more. We can try to distract him and get him to stop crying for a minute, but then it starts right back up again. Since my husband works, I take the night shift of handling the little guy. Man, am I tired! I haven’t been eating anything that everyone says to avoid to keep him from being gassy.. I’m now, as of today, not eating dairy as a last ditch effort, because maybe he has an intolerance to dairy. No more cheese, yogurt, sour cream, ice cream, anything for 2 weeks. Sucks! I love dairy.. hoping this actually works, though. I’d rather change my diet than continue losing extra sleep comforting a crying baby. did I mention I’m tired? yeah..

In 2004, The New York Times wrote an article about the loneliest whale in the world. Scientists have been tracking her since 1992 and they discovered the problem:

She never had one. Her songs come in groups of two to six calls, lasting for five to six seconds each. But her voice is unlike any other baleen whale. It is unique—while the rest of her kind communicate between 12 and 25hz, she sings at 52hz. You see, that’s precisely the problem. No other whales can hear her. Every one of her desperate calls to communicate remains unanswered. Each cry ignored. And, with every lonely song, she becomes sadder and more frustrated, her notes going deeper in despair as the years go by.

Just imagine that massive mammal, floating alone and singing—too big to connect with any of the beings it passes, feeling paradoxically small in the vast stretches of empty, open ocean.

Either I go into labor today, OR I will be induced tomorrow at 1AM (ew, timing). Either way, this is going to happen!!! It is rather surreal.. I will be soooo glad to have my body back, but trying to picture the infant here at home is hard to do. Weird! Excited! *bounce!* Hope I can get some sleep tonight before heading to the hospital :)

I love bats. All those around here eat bugs, which I am all in favor of.. eat those blood-sucking jerks! Also, I’m one of the few people I know who thinks they are cute. And look at this mama bat carrying her baby bat! That extra weight has GOT to be killing her as she’s flying around. So badass.. I love bats.

My friend went home today. We had a good time! She and her mother got me a baby swing as a belated baby shower gift, and a waffle maker for a Christmas gift. Too much! I love both, but making waffles this morning was great :) When I make pancakes I make such a mess of everything, but making waffles was sooooo much easier and cleaner and they were tasty. love it! We wandered around the local mall for about an hour and a half. I had a random woman stop me and tell me that I look like I’m about to have the baby right there. That made me laugh :)

I have my weekly checkup today! I’m looking forward to see how much I’ve progressed from last week. I’m going to be induced Tuesday if I don’t pop before than, which means that a week from today, at the latest, our child will be born!!! OMG, so excited! :)

Had my checkup today. Everything is good! Just the kid is huge. We talked about options for if the kid is late (it is due Jan. 7th), and my doctor expressed concerns that a late child may be too big for me to pass and will need a c-section to get out. I would much rather be induced than have a c-section. I gave the go-ahead to schedule with the hospital a time to be induced, which I can cancel at any time without obligations. So anyway, assuming the child isn’t born sooner, I’m going in to be induced on January 10th. Wish me luck! :)

36 Week Checkup

Just got home from my checkup. The doctor is pleased with everything.. I even have stopped gaining weight, which is good! I gained waaaay too much for a few weeks. The child is still growing.. In fact, he thinks it is larger than usual. He measured my uterus and said that it looks big enough to be 38 weeks. It is right up under my ribs!! So he asked me to come in a little early next week to get a sonogram of the child and see how things are going inside. I’m a little over 1 cm dilated, but not quite up to 2 cm yet. Everything looks normals other than the size of the child. He even commented that if I were to have it now, it would be fine. Here’s hoping I get to meet the kid soon! Show it off to my husband Lion King style and be all like, you helped make this!!! lol :)
